CHAPTER TWELVE

"My name is Lucy and I come in peace." The blue-eyed angel spoke to me as a friend. Her voice was as beautiful as her face and her flowing long hair was as golden as the rising sun. Her snow-white wings slowly flapped and she hovered in the sky slightly above my head. She appeared to be unarmed. "Annis, give me the Judas Dagger and this nightmare will end," said Lucy. "I will return the weapon to the Archives of Heaven. You will not be hunted or harmed by any more angels."

I laughed. "Why would you care what happens to me?"

"I care about peace," she said. "And there will never be peace in Heaven until that stolen blade is returned."

"Peace in Heaven? Why would I ever care about that? What makes this dagger so important to you?"

Lucy sighed. "You should know by now. That terrible weapon has the power to kill any angel. Have you already forgotten that you murdered Niobe?"

"Murdered? She attacked me first." Was I really defending my actions to an angel? I didn't need to justify myself to Lucy or any other creature of Heaven. They were all self-righteous feathered freaks that had celebrated my torture, execution, and suffering in the Lake of Fire. I was tempted to thrust the dagger's blade straight into Lucy's holy heart but fortunately for her I was in a merciful mood. "I'm keeping this dagger. Tell your precious Creator I said thank you." Given all the trouble I'd recently been through to recover the weapon plus the fact it was the catalyst that caused my separation from Sonja there was no chance in Hell I'd simply just give it away, especially to an angel. I was reminded of Niobe's last words before her messy decapitation. She'd asked why God allowed me to kill her with the Judas Dagger. I didn’t know the answer but maybe it was all just part of his mysterious divine plans. Regardless, I was very pleased to have seen the Angel of Death lose her head after she'd so viciously tried to take mine.

"Annis I know where Sonja is," said Lucy. "I even know where to find Amelia. Would you like to be reunited with your mother? She misses you. She's changed more than you can imagine. Just give me the dagger and I’ll tell you everything.”

"Liar!" The mention of Amelia's name was hard enough to hear. But then the arrogant angel dared to suggest that I actually wanted to be reunited with the woman who'd murdered my father and abandoned me as a child. Amelia misses me? She's changed? Such things were impossible and this foolish angel had just committed suicide by speaking those forbidden words to me. Lucy was going to die and I would kill her with the very weapon she feared so much.

"Don't," whispered the voice of Ashley. "She knows where to find Sonja. You must allow Lucy to live." Once again the ghost in my head was right. For Sonja’s sake I decided to wait and I continued listening to the annoying angel.
